Allison Welch became entranced by early music while studying Musicology and Ethnomusicology at The University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1997. She is a founding member of Texas Early Music Project and also performed in the former U.T. Early Music Ensemble under the direction of Daniel Johnson since 1992.

Dr. Welch studied Baroque oboe with Sand Dalton, Randall Cook, and Joyce Alper, and modern oboe with Richard Blair, Doris DeLoach, and Phil Kates. In addition to Texas Early Music Project, she has performed on Baroque oboe with the Texas Bach Choir and Collegium (San Antonio) Jefferson Baroque Orchestra (Ashland, OR), the St. Cecilia Baroque Orchestra (Austin), and Ars Lyrica Houston. As a modern oboist, Dr. Welch serves as principal oboist of the Gillman Light Opera Orchestra of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin, and has performed with the Capital City Men’s Chorus, Pinkstone Productions Opera Workshop Orchestra, and Austin Civic Orchestra. Dr. Welch also serves as TEMP's Production Coordinator.
