Jenny Houghton
Jenny Houghton, soprano
Jenny Houghton is a soprano based in Austin, TX, her hometown. Since 2012 she has been active in Austin's vibrant early music community, appearing as soloist and collaborator with Texas Early Music Project, La Follia Austin Baroque, ensemble viii, Texas Bach Festival, and Austin Baroque Orchestra. Jenny also sings and records with Inversion Ensemble, one of Austin's leading New Music organizations.
Jenny earned her Bachelor’s of Music from Trinity University (San Antonio) in 2007, and her Master’s in Musicology from the University of Maryland in 2010. While in the D.C. area she performed regularly as a member of the University of Maryland Chamber Singers and the Washington Master Chorale, which brought her to the Kennedy Center stage a number of times. The highlight was performing Bach’s Mass in B Minor with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Iván Fischer. It was this formative experience that led her to pursue early music repertoire professionally.
Today, Jenny remains drawn to early music because there's something thrilling about reaching back in time to find that this art is still so very relevant. It reminds us that as much as we evolve, what makes us human is fundamentally unchanged across vast spans of time. Music has a unique ability to unite us in our humanity, something we need now perhaps more than ever.
Jenny lives with her husband, Paul, and two energetic young sons. When she’s not performing, Jenny teaches music at Lotus Montessori, where she seeks to inspire the newest generation of music-lovers!
